Jakarta Mishap

So ...my morning began with finding out that I am all over billboards, tv ads, and other media formats along side a tobacco company who unbeknownst to me is sponsoring my Jakarta date on my current tour. I was not made aware of this and am in no way an advocate or an ambassador for youth smoking. I'm not even a smoker, nor have I ever been. Unfortunately, my only option at this point was to cancel the show in order to stop the sponsorship. However, I can't justify penalizing my fans for someone else's oversight. This is a lose-lose situation for me and I am not happy about it but the damage has been done and I refuse to cancel on my fans. I think the hardest part of situations like this is getting personally attacked for something I was completely unaware of and being used as some kind of political pawn.

umm... when you did ford commercials it wasn't necessarily advocating that kids should go buy cars, right? Perhaps I'm missing something but since when does sponsoring Kelly Clarkson equate to direct marketing to minors.

Alcoholic beverage companies sponsor ALL KINDS of things, in the US, no less... I'd rather suffer second hand smoke than the result of a drunk driver.

Way to keep things in perspective MEDIA OUTLETS.

Everyone might already be telling you this, but Alicia Keys had the same problem about two years ago. She pulled out of her sponsorship and then promised to never accept tobacco sponsorship again. You can at least give a legit statement that you didn't know, but promise to never let someone "make an oversight" again. Youre talented, but just remember who got you where you are today...your fans voted for you to have this superstardom...not to be the face of L.A. Lights that allows 2 yr olds to smoke in Indonesia.

Kelly, your fans deserve to see you without tobacco sponsorship anywhere. I be your lawyers can figure out a way to take out the sponsorship without canceling the show. Then it is a win-win instead of a lose-lose...

Your defiantly correct to point out that this is a lose/lose situation, you probably had no idea that your image was being authorised to used in conjunction with cigarette advertising. However if you are going to stem this criticism you probably need to out, who gave the authorisation for the misuse of your intellectual property and how outraged you are to this situation and state that you are going to talk with your legal team about options as to how you can remedy this misuse of your image combined with another strong condemnation of smoking.

Just a thought,
P.S your Sydney show was unbelievable.

Kelly,

Your fans love you....your fans love you because of how you walk through this world...without letting the fame or the money twist you up. We love you because you are real and because through your music we feel like we truly know who you are, and you are just like us. And because we feel that way...your real fans stick by you always and defend you fiercely....at least i know i get ticked off at any story of weight "issues" (which are just stupid) or this ridiculous crap over a sponsorshop...just retarded.

We love you unconditionally because we know you love us. You aren't awaiting your turn to be featured on Celebrity Rehab...you aren't promoting unhealthy body images to my daughters...you aren't getting arrested every month for DUI's...you are the ultimate role model.

I'm grateful for the way you walk in this world! I'm sure like millions of your other fans..if I could beat up every person who said anything bad about you....I totally would!

Rock On!

My guess is this was a set up by Kelly's tobacco sponsor to try to get extra publicity. As all smart advertisers know, even so-called negative publicity (at least in this case) is good publicity, especially since a lot of it is usually free.

Perez Hilton seems to be in on the scam (i.e., he attacks Kelly for some relatively obscure, totally legal ads for the third biggest tobacco company in Indonesia, yet he keeps completely silent about Lady Gaga wearing a few dozen lit up cigarettes in her latest video?) My guess is Perez was probably paid a hefty sum for this "free" negative publicity by the very company that he is supposedly attacking. And the way the scam works, if it succeeds to the fullest extent so that Perez gets the most amount of money from it, is that Perez then demands that Kelly pull her sponsorship, and supposedly when Kelly "does the right thing" (according to Perez), there is a secondary, even bigger wave of "free" publicity for the tobacco company as this news hits the media outlets.

Well, kudos to Kelly for calling a spade a spade and just telling it like it is without falling for the "second wave" of publicity, as I believe Alicia Keyes may have done two years ago without realizing she was falling for the same scam (the tobacco company involved in the Alicia Keyes scam is still getting ink from that "controversy", btw, even to this day -- and that is probably why they are the biggest tobacco company in Indonesia right now instead of just the third biggest).

Sorry, Perez, thanks to Kelly doing her best to shut this operation down, you probably aren't going to get that second balloon payoff on this one. Go put your women-hating talents to work on some other celebrity this time. Gay men are so friggin good at putting the targets of their hatred and resentment into lose-lose situations. Drives me batty. Wish they would use their talents for good instead of for this crap, but so be it. Onward...

And remember, that's Dr. Crazy Nutjob to you.

So Kelly, I guess it's too bad that some of your fans might've died of smoking related illness the next time you visit Indonesia for a show.

If it's a "lose-lose" situation for you, what'll it be for the families of the deceased?

And remember Kelly, the more fans that die, the fewer albums they'll buy - but then I truly hope you're not just in it for the money.... See More

I know I wouldn't feel too comfortable about lending my image to a product that'll probably cut the lives of children shorter than my career.

Kelly, Alicia Keys had the decency to cancel her concert in Indonesia when the same thing happened to her. You must have very dumb management if you walked into this with your eyes closed ... 200,000 Indonesians die from tobacco caused disease every year. You are helping the companies do this. If you cannot bear the thought of losing the money, then how about you make a BIG PUBLIC STATEMENT through the World Health Organisation condemning the sponsorship. Somehow .. I don;t think you will.

That company is paying for the opportunity to advertise with you.

You're profiting off of helping them sell cigarettes.

The only way to do otherwise is to either a) cancel the show and reschedule it or b) keep the show but nix the sponsor, making up their financial share yourself or via a different sponsor.

option c) of just claiming ignorance while promoting the show is cowardly and will clearly be harmful to the health of Indonesian youth who look up to you and the products you support.

I want to be a fan, but now I don't know.

Please don't do the show with the tobacco sponsorship. Cancel if you have to. Your fans (and I'm one of them!) will not just totally understand but will even be bigger fans of yours.

It's definitely a lose-lose situation. I wish there was a way for you to "get back at them" by holding the concert without their sponsorship -- even if it means a smaller venue.

Please exhaust all means possible (not that you aren't) and make an official statement so that all will understand what happened.

Kelly,

The sponsorship by LA Light has no bearing on you going forward, I have spent considerable time, multiple trips to Indonesia since 1993, it is common that the tobacco companies sponsor artists in Indonesia, I was a one by Krisdayanti sponsored by LA Light, no one says anything, it is really common. They sponsor it, but they are not handing out cigarettes to the fans, the fans want to hear the music, Indonesians are wonderful people, are respectful and love music!!!!

It SUCKS to be placed in that situation but going thru with the tobacco sponsor is just wrong. Get rid of them. If you can't legally (it's in the contract or something) - just cancel or postpone.

Your fans will love you more for making the harder decision.

It looks like smoking is part of the local culture...I totally agree with Phil that it doesn't say anything about you BUT unfortunately the world doesn't look at things that way.

A sponsor is a sponsor and smoking isn't McDonald's. It forces the artist to make a stand.

You all should know by now what it is like in the industry and especially how the media is, it is sad that some of you are giving her crap. It actually pisses me off because you should know what kind of person she is. She is an AMAZING role model for all of us, she will continue to be and screw that company for doing this. She is always getting picked on in the media and now her reputation is being targeted for something that she didn't even know of until it was too late. If she loved her fans she would cancel the show? By choosing not to, that is because she does love her fans! Why should she let them down when they paid and looked forward to seeing her just because of this? Everyone needs to just back off, leave her alone. She is an amazing singer, person and that will never change. So stop trying to make her something she isn't. Bad role model? Riiiiiiight, you just made yourself sound so stupid. Shame on you. ________________________________

About 9 out of 10 posts here are written by "anonymous" posters, and most of those posts, if you read them carefully, are obviously written by the same one or two people (I say it is probably just one or two gay men since Perez is the lead scammer here) who are being paid by a tobacco company to try to control people's thoughts and ideas on this issue. Yes, smoking is a problem in Indonesia as everywhere else. Yes, there are real anti-smoking activists out there like me, but at the same time, there are even more "fake activists" out there paid for by specific tobacco companies just to promote the name of the company. It is exactly what I would do if I were a greedy tobacco company.

Mark my word -- this is an advertising scam. Kelly is being used as a political pawn (as was Alicia Keyes two years ago -- because women are always more easily targeted than men, especially by the women-hating JAGMA -- the Jealous and Angry Gay Man Army), and somebody is being paid handsomely to kill two birds with one stone -- that is, to try to undermine a woman artist and at the same time promote the name of a tobacco company for brand recognition.

And sorry, hate to disappoint you, too, but taking the ads down one day before the concert when they have been up for probably months is definitely not a "victory" for Indonesian anti-smoking activists, especially when the entire goal for doing so is to get newspapers around the world to print the name of the tobacco company -- once again.

The best way to cut down on smoking in children and especially in teenagers is to tell them they look absolutely stupid when they smoke, tell them it gives them ugly yellow teeth for life, and tell them it gives them really bad breath (like I would much prefer kissing somebody with regular bad breath than somebody with smoker's breath -- YUCK!) However, you will never hear a "fake" anti-smoking activist (like Perez Hilton, for instance) say these things because they are too busy talking about how "smoking kills", which they know full well only makes smoking more attractive to teenagers as it ads an element of danger and risk to the smoker's image. So be it. Onward...

And remember, that's Dr. Crazy Nutjob to you.

Political pawn? Give me a break! You are making good money through these sponsorships and concerts. Don't play the victim, play the role model. Performers don't have to be gutless, apolitical, on-stage phenomenons. Your fans will respect you for having depth, for doing the right thing, for thinking creatively about how you might still perform in Jakarta under the banner of something that adds value to life -- as opposed to performing under the banner of a deadly product that finds its way into the hands of children precisely because of brand placement at youth-oriented events like your upcoming show.

I've sat and read each and every comment... In life, you will make decisions and someone is gonna have something to say and not everyone will be happy. Regardless if you do the concert or not, you may lose "fans" on each end of the spectrum... In that case, those are your fair-weather fans... Here today... gone tomorrow... Your true fans have been with you since 2002 and know your spirit and passion deep down from within. Do what you think is best and not let others influence your decision. As Bill O'Reilly once said "Who's looking out for you?" I can guarantee you that the 59 postings prior to mine do not know all the facts/circumstances, so they can't objectively advise what course of action will ultimately be in YOUR best interest. How ever it turns out, whether you go or not, I support your decision and will continue to be that same dedicated fan I have been for the past 8 years! :0)

I just watched your show last night in Kuala Lumpur and I was exceptionally thrilled in being able to sing along and dance with you when you sang My Life Would Suck Without You. Before your show was advertised I've always suggested the idea of you performing in Malaysia but everyone responded to me like I was talking nonsense. Your performance in Malaysia was what I've always anticipated and believed could happen I thank the organiser, Galaxy, for bringing you to our paradise. I hope you will come back to Malaysia again, Kelly.

Dear Kelly, I find you the most sincere and down-to-earth exceptionally talented artist. Don't be bogged down by the tobacco incident - things happen and it's just life. The most important is that you're true to yourself and that you DID NOT deceive anyone - you can't be punished for something you didn't know. I really enjoyed your concert in Singapore tonight. Your performance was superb and you seemed to enjoy yourself just as much as we did. You'll always have our support. Thanks sweets

Kelly,
I just wanted to say that I'm really sorry to hear about the situation you were put in.
I'm from Australia and your show here was absolutely amazing. In fact, it was the best night of my life.
I couldn't have been more proud to call myself a fan when you got up on stage performing barefoot, with your hair up. Because the truth is, I went to hear your voice, not to see you completely dolled up like every other pop singer out there. Thank you for being your down to earth self and not letting the fame and money get to your head.
You're so talented and beautiful, never change, you'll always have my support :)

i was watching one of your videos on youtube and i don't like this people who are commenting about your weight they are so rude for me it hurts to read about those comment like jumping fat beef, she is so fat, she is so big, etc, etc.... when people watch a performer like you can they not just watch people perform instead of saying those negative comments. Queen latifah is big, adel is big, patty label is big, and other big performers. For me, it's not about the weight it is about the performer. you have a wonderful voice, you're beautiful inside and out in other words you are a down to earth person unlike carrie underwood she is not too friendly she acts like she's all that. you are the best american idol ever and you are my favorite idol since the beginning. other perfomers that i like are whitney houston, mariah carey and of course celine dion.hope this people will stop talking about your weight and watch you instead.

I dont think anyone here understands how long it will take for kelly to take this to court and get her smoke sponsors off her shoulders.

If she does this she will miss out on more than one tour.

So don't tell kelly to freaking hire lawyers and stuff that will take forever.

Id rather cancel one show to prevent sponsorship for them rather than canceling over 10+ shows because she's to bussy getting the sponsorship off her shoulders.

Some people here are insanely stupid and don't realise that she had no choice but to cancel it.

If she didn't people would think she allows this and wants chilren to smoke.

And besides its the parents fault if their children smokes nobody elses. You should always teach your child that they should be themselves and avoid group pressure.

And then a good idea is to let them try a smoke when they're 11-12 and then they will never smoke again trust me my parents did that to me and i have never smoked again in my entire life nor have i ever drinked alcohol.

Dont judge kelly when you think that getting these smoke sponsors off her shoulders is gona take just one day.

Kelly has now cancelle the sponsorship she won the fight against jakarta.

Kelly did not suggest cancelling the show someone else did,

kelly did not approve of that and decided to fight them instead.

Kelly is not scared of them and she's been in argument with her record label for years what makes them think that a smoking sponsorship is gona work on kelly?

Kelly isn't scared of losing her fame or anything even if she does she will come back eventually with a new label and great new album.

Im so glad kelly thought of her fans and decide to fight against them rather than cancelling the show.

Hey Kelly,

this is just to tell you that in my opinion, you are the only celebrity worth caring about because you are the only real human being in this business. You put so much heart and soul in your work, I deeply admire you for that. And having been a fan of yours for years now I still can feel that you are telling a story with every song you sing. Your latest blog proves even more that you are a sincere person (and they are very rare in this music industry). Keep up the great work. Hope you come to Germany more often.

Love, Mantichora

Kelly...I'm a father of a 12-year old girl, and a bass player as well (currently doing a Cruise Ship Production gig) and I, like you, believe that artists can and SHOULD be aware of sponsorships and products and what your influence might be on younger fans. And I've noticed you ALWAYS stick up for the right things...like speaking out about that tobacco sponsorship you didn't know about. Big companies always seem to try to take advantage of popular artists like you....GLAD you spoke up about that. Gotta say...as a musician and a dad...I am proud to have you be a model to my daughter. Keep up the great music AND your integrity. You rock. Don Lieber (bass)

Dear Kelly,
You are an amazing and talented singer who had come far from season one of american idol to the talented singer you are today. I am from Indonesia, Jakarta and I want to apologize about the tobacco sponsorship. I've been your biggest fan since the beginning. I admire your work and love all your songs and I think it is all wonderful starting from Sober, Already gone, Don't let me stop you, Miss Independent, Walk Away, Behind these Hazel eyes, and Never again. The song that you and kara dioguardi wrote "walk away" inspired me to write songs in English. By the way, I am from indonesia, jakarta. Hopefully you will come here.

Your concert does not force people to smoke, or not smoke. I grew up with smoking ads on TV, newspapers, and magazines. It did not want to make me smoke. The fools that think it tarnishes a celebrity are fools.
